Question: David Petersen BS, CSCS is a Biokineticist. What is Biokinetics and a Biokineticist?
Answer: The closest comparison to a biokineticist may be an exercise physiologist, athletic trainer or a highly educated personal trainer. In South Africa however, Biokinetics is a medically recognized profession grouped under the same umbrella as physical therapy and podiatry (foot doctor). To receive registration with the Health Professionals Council of South Africa (HPCSA), biokineticists must complete a year of postgraduate studies in exercise science at an approved university and a yearlong clinical internship at a registered biokinetic practice. Once the education process is complete, these exercise professionals may open a private practice and prescribe exercise for various human conditions requiring final phase rehabilitation such as orthopedic (sports) injuries, stroke and cardiac complications. Most patients/clients are referred down the rehab chain from physician to physical therapist to biokineticist. Biokineticists are not limited strictly to rehabilitative type exercise, but are also highly skilled in athlete performance improvement as well. Therefore, when one combines the medical education of an athletic trainer or exercise physiologist with the performance enhancing skills of a strength and conditioning coach, one quite aptly describes the comprehensive role of a biokineticist in the sports medicine and performance field as well.
Question: What is the CSCS credential, and how does it compare to a regular personal trainer?
Answer: According to the NSCA –CC (National Strength and Conditioning Association Certification Commission): “The Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist (CSCS) program was created in 1985 to identify individuals who possess the knowledge and skills to design and implement safe and effective strength and conditioning programs for athletes in a team setting. The credentialing program encourages a higher level of competence among practitioners that raises the quality of strength training and conditioning programs provided by those who are CSCS certified.” In fact, most conditioning coaches at the professional and collegiate level are CSCS certified. To earn the prestigious CSCS credential, an individual must pass one of the most challenging and respected exams in the fitness industry. To simply apply to take the exam an individual must have obtained at least a bachelor's degree, preferably in an exercise/health science related field. The individual holding the credential demonstrates an exceptional level of knowledge of anatomy, exercise physiology, biomechanics, and testing/evaluation. In addition, the NSCA Certification Commission's CSCS and NSCA-Certified Personal Trainer (NSCA- CPT) certifications are the only certification programs in the fitness industry nationally accredited with National Commission for Certifying Agencies (NCCA) since 1993.
