  About the B.O.S.S. Fitness Website

Knowledge is power and it is the goal of this website to provide cutting edge information, services and products to help visitors maximize results and increase the fun and functionality of their personal training.  We also intend this site to supply the visitor with tools to help cut through the mass of questionable and sometimes skewed theories concerning exercise by offering a scientific and yet holistic perspective.  Most of the articles and tips found on the website have been written by us and are not simply links to the work and knowledge of other individuals. The concept of presenting original articles exclusive to this site helps to demonstrate the knowledge base we use to direct clients in achieving their goals.

Whether your goals are to improve body composition (fat loss/lean muscle gain) and function, develop an edge in sports performance, rehabilitate an injury or receive sound advice on nutrition, a sincere attempt has been made to make the information easy to read and understand. If however, you find a concept that needs further clarification or one that may benefit an online discussion, please contact us and let us know.   Browse our online store for some the best fitness products on the net.

  about founder

B.O.S.S. Fitness Inc. is a small business venture that was founded in 2004 by me, David Petersen.  Although born in Doylestown P.A., I spent most of my youth growing up in beautiful South Africa, at the age of sixteen, my family and I returned to the USA to live in Clearwater, Florida.   In 1993 I started participating in recreational body building and found exercise not only to be a fulfilling past-time, but later also to be a passion and a life-calling.  After obtaining an Associates Degree, a Certified Personal Training credential with the IFPA (International Fitness Professionals Association) and some work/life experience, I decided to return to South Africa in 1999 to continue my studies in exercise science.

I obtained a Bachelor of Science degree from the University of Stellenbosch.  Personal training at the University gym financed my studies and gave me valuable learning experience working with and conditioning athletes.  Upon graduation, I applied for and was accepted for post-graduate studies at the University of Cape Town and the Sports Science Institute of South Africa (SSISA) headed by world-renowned exercise physiologist and sports physician, Prof.  Tim Noakes - one of our advisors and author of the “runners bible”, Lore of Running.  I had the rare opportunity of working closely with Prof. Noakes on a very interesting research project and he inspired me and my fellow students to “think outside the box” when considering theories relating to exercise science and personal development training.

With my post-grad degree in hand, I had expanded my knowledge as an exercise scientist and became a registered Biokineticist.   In addition during my required internship year, I was able to obtain the highly respected Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist (CSCS) credential from the NSCA. Upon my return to Florida in 2004, I started training clients at a local country club, conditioning golfers and assisting other members suffering with medical problems such as back pain (see Case Studies and Testimonials).

Being a firm believer in the value of functional exercise, during this time I experimented with and purchased the equipment for what would become the basis of the Cable Resist Assist Method (C.R.A.M.) - an exercise method currently being developed by a rehabilitation equipment manufacturer in Florida.  Also during this period, I planned this website as a means of promoting myself and to offer the general public scientifically sound advice on various aspects of exercise and fitness.

(I love traveling too - see what happened when a hippo got agro and bit this canoe!  Zambezi River, Zimbabwe 2000)

  Tim Noakes, MD, DSc.

Tim Noakes, MD, DSc.
Professor of Exercise and Sports Science and Director of the UCT/MRC Research Unit for Exercise Science and Sports Medicine at SSISA

Professor Tim Noakes was my (David's) mentor at the Sports Science Institute of South Africa (SSISA) and the University of Cape Town (UCT).  He is widely regarded as one of the foremost exercise physiologists, sports doctors and lecturers in the world and is probably best known for his book Lore of Running - widely acclaimed as the “runners’ bible” and now in its fourth edition.   In the year I spent under his instruction, I found him brilliant yet very amiable and easy to talk to and he insisted that we all call him “Tim”, not Doctor or Professor.  He inspired my fellow students and me to question the very flimsy theories dominating the exercise science world today.

Currently, Dr. Noakes is the Discovery Health Professor of Exercise and Sports Science and Director of the UCT/MRC Research Unit for Exercise Science and Sports Medicine at SSISA.  He serves on the editorial boards of eight international scientific publications, is a Fellow of the American College of Sports Medicine (awarded 1996 J.B. Wolffe Memorial Lecture), and has won numerous awards for his research.  In 1999 he was elected as one of 22 founding members of the International Olympic Committee's Science Academy. Recently, he was awarded the credential of Doctor of Science (DSc.) one of the highest credentials given to a scientist.  Also, his research on fluid replacement in athletes competing in extended duration events has motivated USA Track and Field to revamp their hydration guidelines.

Not only is Dr. Noakes a scientist and a medical doctor but also an athlete, his groundbreaking convictions and theories are guided by his keen insight and personal experiences as a runner of over 70 marathons.  His expertise lies in many fields, but he has a special interest in fluid requirements of athletes during prolonged exercise, injury prevention in rugby and reasons for the termination of exercise.  His  central governor theory of exercise performance continues to gain more and more credibility from continual studies performed at the Institute.
